Body, Space, and Stage Technology: A Choreographic Experiment of Flying Rig by ISI Yogyakarta Students

Yogyakarta, March 12, 2026 - Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta once again demonstrated its role as a center for the development of innovative performing arts through the solo examination work of a student of the Faculty of Performing Arts, Laksmi Alysia Azzahra, who presented a choreographic exploration by utilizing the flying rig stage technique. wire work. This artistic experiment features dancers' bodies moving and floating in the air, creating a different visual experience from conventional dance performances.

In the work, stage technology is used as a medium of artistic exploration that allows the body to interact directly with gravity. Through suspension techniques using slings and rigging systems, the dancer's body not only dances in the stage space, but also navigates the air space as part of the choreographic composition. This approach opens up new possibilities in the creation of contemporary dance that combines movement aesthetics with stage technology.

The work also carries a deep conceptual dimension. The movement born from floating in the air becomes a metaphor for early human biological memory. Through the experience of suspension, the body explores the sensation of floating, pressure, and spatial limitations that reflect the human experience of being in the womb. In the process, the body negotiates with balance, gravity and space, so that the movements that emerge are the result of a process of adaptation and discovery.

This choreographic experiment shows the courage of Indonesia's young generation of artists in pushing the boundaries of performing arts conventions. The integration of dance and stage technology presents a form of artistic expression that is not only technically challenging, but also enriches the aesthetic possibilities in contemporary choreographic practice.

The process of creating this work took place through a cross-field collaboration involving various art practitioners and stage technicians. The work was mentored by Raja Epi, with musical composition support from Belmiro AVR. The safety aspects and equipment of the flying rig were handled by the Freedom Art Stunt team, while the rigging process and operations were carried out by Kukuh MNR. The documentation of the work also involved the creative collaboration of photographer Adith Thaariq and videographer Reva Apriliana, as well as the support of the production crew who ensured the smooth running of the show.

The presence of this work also shows the learning ecosystem that develops within ISI Yogyakarta, where students are encouraged to conduct artistic explorations that transcend disciplinary boundaries. The integration of the tradition of the body in dance with innovations in stage technology is part of a pedagogical approach that allows students to develop an artistic language that is relevant to global art developments.

As the largest arts college in Indonesia, ISI Yogyakarta continues to strengthen its commitment in encouraging the birth of creative and experimental works from the younger generation of artists. Laksmi Alysia Azzahra's exploration is one example of how arts education does not only produce performances, but also becomes a space for artistic research that expands new possibilities in performing arts practice.

Through various creative experiments like this, ISI Yogyakarta has further strengthened its position as one of the centers for progressive performing arts development in Indonesia, as well as a space for the birth of artistic innovations that are able to contribute to the dynamics of contemporary art at the national and international levels.
