Yogyakarta, 6 January 2026 - The Art Conservation Study Program of Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta held a Paper Conservation Workshop in collaboration with Sonobudoyo Museum, the activity which took place at the Sonobudoyo Museum Conservation Laboratory presented Dr. habil. Patricia Engel from the University for Continuing Education Krems (UWK Krems), Austria, as the main speaker.
This workshop was designed as a space for capacity building and cross-institutional knowledge exchange in the field of paper conservation, as well as supporting the development of practice-based learning at ISI Yogyakarta. On the first day, the activity was attended by conservators from Sonobudoyo Museum, Vredeburg Fort Museum, Borobudur Cultural Heritage Conservation Center, UGM Museum, Yogyakarta Special Region Provincial Cultural Office, and lecturers of the Art Conservation Study Program.
The first day's material focused on handling damage iron gall ink corrosion on paper-based collections, which is one of the main challenges in the conservation of historic archives and manuscripts. Dr. Patricia Engel presented scientific approaches and research-based conservation best practices that have been applied internationally.
On the second day, the workshop was attended by students and lecturers of Art Conservation ISI Yogyakarta together with conservators of Sonobudoyo Museum. The material covered general knowledge about paper, material characteristics, and various types of damage commonly found in paper-based collections, accompanied by discussions and contextual learning from real cases.
Through this activity, ISI Yogyakarta emphasizes its commitment to strengthening the synergy between higher education and museum institutions, as well as increasing the competence of human resources in the field of cultural heritage conservation. This Paper Conservation Workshop is expected to be a strategic step in the development of art conservation science that combines the approaches of art, science, and cultural preservation.
