Yogyakarta, April 15, 2026 — Students from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta have once again achieved a proud accomplishment at the international level. In the AI Ready ASEAN Youth Challenge, organized by AI Singapore, a team of ISI Yogyakarta students successfully broke into the Top 10 in Indonesia with their innovation, Evacuation Mesh (EvacMesh), an emergency evacuation communication and navigation system based on artificial intelligence and offline Bluetooth mesh.
This achievement confirms that ISI Yogyakarta is not only excellent as an art higher education institution but also capable of producing creative talents that are adaptive, innovative, and relevant to current humanitarian challenges. Through an interdisciplinary approach, ISI Yogyakarta students demonstrate that art, design, and technology can converge in a single idea that has a real impact on society.
In the competition, participants were challenged to present AI solutions capable of addressing real-world problems in the social environment. Responding to this challenge, the ISI Yogyakarta team developed EvacMesh, an offline application designed to support evacuation processes during disasters, especially when internet networks or conventional communication infrastructure are unreliable.
Through this system, users can stay connected with each other, share field condition information, and obtain real-time safe route recommendations without an internet connection. This innovation offers a practical and visionary approach to supporting public safety in emergency situations, including in the context of disasters such as volcanic eruptions.
The achievements were attained by three students from ISI Yogyakarta, namely Gregorius Guntur Jembar Wicaksono from the Product Design Study Program, class of 2023, Nuraini Yusmaida from the Interior Design Study Program class of 2024, and Carlos Septiawan from the Visual Communication Design Study Program, Class of 2025. Their collaboration is a concrete example of the strength of ISI Yogyakarta's academic ecosystem, which fosters interdisciplinary encounters to give birth to innovative, solution-oriented, and competitive creations.
This success also strengthens ISI Yogyakarta's position as an art higher education institution that continues to move forward, is responsive to global developments, and consistently builds an academic culture that encourages the courage to experiment. Amidst the acceleration of technological transformation, ISI Yogyakarta students prove that an art and design background can indeed be an important foundation in designing solutions that are humanist, communicative, and close to the needs of society.
This achievement is in line with the spirit of the Impactful Campus, which ISI Yogyakarta continuously promotes, namely presenting real contributions through education, research, creation, and innovation that provide broad benefits. The students' achievements in this event not only make the institution proud but also show that higher education in art has a strategic position in shaping a more inclusive, creative, and resilient future.
Currently, the team EvacMesh still has a chance to go further to achieve the best position. ISI Yogyakarta expresses its highest appreciation for this achievement. This success is expected to be an inspiration for the entire academic community to continue working, expand collaborations, and assert the role of Indonesian arts and design in innovatively and impactfully addressing global issues.
Congratulations to the student team from ISI Yogyakarta on this proud achievement. This accomplishment signifies that great ideas, capable of speaking on a global level and giving meaning to society's future, are born from a campus of the arts.
