NAFA Singapore Theater Students Perform "Roro Jonggrang" at ISI Yogyakarta

Students of the Theater Study Program from NAFA Singapore held a ketoprak performance entitled "Roro Jonggrang: Princess Of Prambanan Temple" on July 18, 2024, at the Arena Theater of the Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta, at 16.00 WIB until completion. In this performance, students act as performers (dancers) and musicians (pengrawit). Usually ISI Yogyakarta residents are accustomed to watching performances played by their academic community, but yesterday they were presented with a ketoprak performance that used English as the language of instruction and was played by foreign students from NAFA Singapore.

This ketoprak performance is the final result of The Overseas Immersion Program followed by NAFA Singapore students at ISI Yogyakarta. For two weeks Theater Students from NAFA Singapore visited Yogyakarta and the ISI Yogykarta campus to learn culture by participating in various workshops such as dance, puppetry, theater, karawitan and performing the exotic story of the legend of Prambanan Temple at the end of the program. With the guidance of lecturers from the Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta, students were finally able to stage a ketoprak entitled "Roro Jonggrang: Princess Of Prambanan Temple" which was welcomed by the audience at the Arena Theater of the Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta.

According to Dr. I Nyoman Cau Arsana, S.Sn., M.Sn. as the Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta "The performance was held as an effort to see the results of the learning process for two weeks at the Faculty of Performing Arts". He further said that similar performances had been carried out last year in the frame of The Overseas Immersion Program and hopefully this collaboration will continue in the following year.

Students who participated in The Overseas Immersion Program at ISI Yogyakarta are students of the Theatre Study Program at NAFA Singapore. While at ISI Yogyakarta they attended various workshops such as theater, dance, puppetry and music. The performance of Roro Jongrang ketoprak combines the various competencies they learned during the workshop at ISI Yogyakarta, said Adrew James Mowatt as the delegation coordinator and one of the lecturers in the Theater Study Program at NAFA Singapore.

This ketoprak performance was not only witnessed by the ISI Yogyakarta academic community, but also the general public. Improvisations made by foreign students from Singapore in presenting the folklore of Roro Jonggrang actually provoked laughter from the audience.
