ISI Yogyakarta and HfK Bremen Hold "Creating Cultural Dialogues" Program in Germany for 16 Days

Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta and Hochschule für Künste (HfK) Bremen, Germany, collaborated to organize an international program with the theme "Creating Cultural Dialogues: Teaching Art and Design in Transcultural Contexts". The program was held from 14 to 29 June 2025 in Bremen, Germany. This international program is an important event to enrich insights, build academic networks, and develop approaches to art and design in a transcultural context.

For 16 days, a delegation from ISI Yogyakarta consisting of lecturers and doctoral students will participate in various intensive activities. The series of programs began on Saturday, June 14, 2025, with departure from Jakarta to Hamburg via Dubai. Upon arrival in Hamburg, the group was welcomed by HfK Bremen and then continued their journey to Bremen using a local train.

Activities in Bremen began with a city tour of Bremen on June 15, visiting historical landmarks such as the Dom, Schnoor, Böttcherstraße and Schlachte. The following day, participants were introduced to HfK Bremen's facilities and prepared materials for courses and workshops.

On June 17, the group visited the Güterbahnhof area which is the center of alternative culture, followed by a barbecue together. The academic agenda intensified with the Joint Colloquium for PhD students of ISI and HfK Bremen on June 18-19 on board the "MS Dauerwelle".

The culminating academic activity of the "Artistic Research Networking Colloquium" was also held on June 20 at the HfK Bremen auditorium, involving international guests from Groningen, Helsinki, Hannover, and Durban.

Interestingly, the program also facilitated art excursions to various cities. On June 21, participants visited Groningen (Netherlands) to experience museums, markets and the hofjes area. The next day, it was on to Hamburg to explore the Kunsthalle Museum and Elbphilharmonie. On June 23, participants visit the artist village of Worpswede, known for its art community and museums.

The culmination of the academic collaboration took place on June 24-26, when doctoral students from ISI Yogyakarta had the opportunity to teach BA and MA students from HfK Bremen in joint seminars and workshops, as well as visiting the Schwankhalle and Städtische Galerie.

On June 27, the program continued with curator meetings and visits to art institutions such as Weserburg and Kunsthalle Bremen. Students also prepared an exhibition of the workshop results at Güterbahnhof Tor 26 which was officially opened on June 28 with a farewell dinner.

The program closed on June 29 with the delegation returning to Jakarta. Through this initiative, ISI Yogyakarta and HfK Bremen hope to strengthen academic collaboration, enrich cross-cultural experiences, and open up opportunities for sustainable cooperation in the fields of art and design in the future.
