Practitioner Teaching Program: Exploring the Development of Typography and Typefaces in the Digital Age

The Visual Communication Design (DKV) Study Program of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design ISI Yogyakarta continues to innovate in practice-based learning by organizing a Teaching Practitioner program in Typography courses. The activity which was held on October 23, 24, 25 and 30, 2024 aims to deepen students' understanding of the development of typography, typeface, and its application in the world of modern design.

In this activity, students received direct guidance from Rachmad Kurniawan, a typography expert, illustrator and professional designer who has been working in the design industry for more than 10 years. The practitioner provided insights into the history of typography development, the latest trends in typeface design, and how digital technology has changed the way designers create and use typefaces. Typography is not just about aesthetics, but also communication. Choosing and applying the right typeface can strengthen the message a design is trying to convey. One of the main focuses in this program is to introduce students to various styles and types of typefaces, ranging from classic serifs to modern sans-serifs, as well as experimental typefaces that are developing in the digital era. Practitioners also explain the principles of typeface design, including aspects of proportion, contrast, and legibility, which form the basis of creating quality typographic works.

In the interactive sessions, students were given the opportunity to experiment with creating their own lettering designs using the demonstrated software. Each student was invited to integrate elements of personal creativity with learned typographic principles. Some of the software developed, some of which is open source, can be used for free, making it quite facilitating for lettering creators. The software is tried to be demonstrated in the classroom so that it opens new insights and is continued with a light discussion about experiences for students who have tried digitizing letters. Through this Teaching Practitioner program, ISI Yogyakarta's Visual Communication Design Study Program shows its commitment to providing learning experiences that are relevant to industry developments, ensuring that graduates have a competitive advantage in an increasingly digital world of work.
