ISI Yogyakarta Strengthens International Cooperation with HfK Bremen through DAAD Program and Academic Exchange 2025–2026

Bremen, Germany May 30, 2026 – The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta continues to strengthen its international network through an academic cooperation program with the Hochschule für Künste Bremen (HfK Bremen), Germany, in a project titled “Creating Cultural Dialogues: Teaching Art and Design in Transcultural Contexts.” This program, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), will run for two years, from 2025 to 2026.
An academic visit of a delegation from ISI Yogyakarta to Bremen is currently underway from May 30 to June 15, 2026. The delegation of ten people consists of program managers and doctoral students from ISI Yogyakarta's Postgraduate Doctoral Program who are participating in various academic, research, and cultural exchange activities with the academic community of HfK Bremen.
This program was initiated by Prof. Dr. Annette Geiger from HfK Bremen, as part of strengthening academic collaboration and artistic research between the two institutions. The ISI Yogyakarta delegation was led by the Director of the Postgraduate Program at ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Fortunata Tyasrinestu, S.S., M.Si., along with Octavianus Cahyono Priyanto, S.T., M.Arch., Ph.D., as the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program at ISI Yogyakarta.
During their stay in Bremen, participants engaged in various academic and cultural activities. One of the main agendas was a workshop organized by doctoral students from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta for students from the Hochschule für Künste (HfK) Bremen, a Doctoral Colloquium, and an Artistic Research Seminar, which took place at two locations: the HfK Bremen campus and the Güterbahnhof Bremen – Areal für Kunst und Kultur, a center for arts and culture.
This activity not only strengthens academic collaboration but also fosters cross-cultural dialogue between Indonesia and Germany through the approaches of art, design, and artistic research. Doctoral students from both institutions gain opportunities to present their research progress, exchange methodologies, and explore future international collaboration opportunities.
As a form of institutional support for the program, the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn., will also take the time to visit between these activities from June 4–8, 2026. This visit aims to strengthen the strategic cooperation between ISI Yogyakarta and HfK Bremen, as well as support the development of international networks in the fields of art, design, higher art education, and artistic research.
During the visit, the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta will also hold an audience with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Berlin to discuss the development of ISI Yogyakarta's international cooperation and opportunities for strengthening Indonesian cultural diplomacy through arts education. The meeting with KBRI Berlin is scheduled to take place on June 5, 2026.
Through this DAAD-supported program, ISI Yogyakarta demonstrates its commitment to continuously improving the quality of its globally-oriented higher art education, while simultaneously strengthening Indonesia's position in international discourse on art, design, and artistic research in a transcultural era.
