Ethnomusicology Students at ISI Yogyakarta Explore Philosophy, History, and National Identity Through a Visit to Gedung Agung

Yogyakarta, May 13, 2026 -- The Ethnomusicology Department, Faculty of Performing Arts, Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, is holding an event Philosophy Class: Field Trip Edition by visiting the State Palace of Gedung Agung in Yogyakarta. This activity is part of a contextual learning process that connects studies of philosophy, art, history, architecture, and national values.

Through the visit, students were invited to take a closer look at the “Face of Yogyakarta” as a space of history, culture, and national thought. Gedung Agung is understood not only as a historical building, but also as a symbol of Indonesia's journey, a center of collective memory, and a space representing noble values that form national identity.

This activity demonstrates that art learning at ISI Yogyakarta does not stop at musical practice or mere artistic creation. In the academic tradition of Ethnomusicology, art is studied as a part of human life that is closely related to history, society, philosophy, culture, and critical thinking.

Via field trip Here, students gain firsthand experience in understanding the meaning behind the spaces, architecture, symbols, and historical narratives present at the Gedung Agung. From classrooms and philosophy books, students are brought into a living historical reality, making the learning process more reflective, critical, and relevant to the Indonesian cultural context.

The Ethnomusicology Department at ISI Yogyakarta views this activity as an effort to broaden students' horizons in understanding art as both an intellectual and cultural practice. Art is not merely positioned as an expression of sound, performance, or an aesthetic form, but also as a way to understand humans, values, space, memory, and civilization.

“This activity is an important part of learning that positions students as active readers of cultural and historical realities. Art is not just about sound, but also about deep thinking, sensitivity in reading signs, and the ability to understand the values that live within society,” stated the Ethnomusicology Department of ISI Yogyakarta.

The visit to Gedung Agung also demonstrated ISI Yogyakarta's commitment to providing art education that is rooted in the nation's historical and cultural heritage. As a leading institution for art education, ISI Yogyakarta continuously encourages students to not only be skilled in their artistic fields but also to possess broad insights, social sensitivity, and a strong historical awareness.

Through activities like these, ISI Yogyakarta solidifies its position as a higher education institution for the arts that develops interdisciplinary learning. Students are not only equipped with artistic abilities but also with critical thinking skills, contextual understanding, and an appreciation for art as a part of the nation's life dynamics.

Philosophy Class: Field Trip Edition to be proof that the educational process at ISI Yogyakarta continues to move creatively and relevantly. By combining philosophical learning, field experience, and cultural reflection, ISI Yogyakarta strengthens its role as a birthplace for knowledgeable, characterful artists who make significant contributions to Indonesian culture.
