ISI Yogyakarta Dance Students Win Silver Price at World Mask Play Competition, Andong Mask Dance Festival 2024

Students of the Department of Dance, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Yogyakarta won the Silver Price at the World Mask Play Competition, Andong Mask Dance Festival 2024 in Korea. The Korean mask dance festival was held on September 27 - October 6, 2024. Students of the Dance Department consisting of Raffy Adi, Nur Istikomah, Hamdani, Dhimas Adam and Krisna Aji performed a dance entitled Hnhikoh Pamang Patutn by Nur Istikomah. In this competition, Dance Students participated in the group category which was held on October 3 - 5, 2024 and was attended by representatives from 25 countries.

The dance work "Hnhikoh Pamang Patutn" was inspired by Nggawia Nibakng (in Dayak Bidayuh language) or Nyobeng (in Indonesian language) which is still preserved by the Dayak Bidayuh tribe, Sebujit, Bengkayang, West Kalimantan. Nyobeng is a ritual ceremony to bathe the skulls of enemies who were defeated on the battlefield in ancient times. Nyobeng comes from the word Nibakng or Sibakng, a great ritual that cannot be done carelessly. Nibakng is an expression of gratitude to Tipaiakng (a reference to God in the Bidayuh language) for the blessings of the rice harvest. It also used to mean a ritual or ceremony to honor the human head obtained from caving.

The World Mask Play Competition is part of the 2024 Andong Mask Dance Festival that took place in Andong, South Korea, from September 27 to October 6 this year. The festival was organized to celebrate the Korean mask dance tradition, known as the talchumThe festival also features various mask dance performances from around the world. Activities include an international mask dance competition, where participants can perform dances using masks or face paintings that match the festival's theme.

The achievements obtained by the Dance Department Students are certainly proud of all ISI Yogyakarta residents and hopefully able to inspire ISI Yogyakarta students to continue to excel.
