BREMEN, GERMANY, June 10, 2026 – Seven doctoral students from the Art Doctoral Program of the ISI Yogyakarta Postgraduate Program are participating Ph.D. Colloquium & Artistic Research Conference at the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK) in Germany, as part of the international program Creating Cultural Dialogues: Teaching Art and Design in Transcultural Contexts. This activity is a strategic step for ISI Yogyakarta in expanding its international artistic research network, while also strengthening the position of Indonesian art higher education institutions in global academic discourse.
The seven students involved in the activity were Mufi Mubaroh, Elaine Steffanny Tumilar, Suvi Wahyudianto, Anindya Puspita, Riri Irma Survani, Jefri Soli Kabnani, and Aji Susanto Anom Purnomo. They were accompanied by lecturers from the Doctoral Program in Arts at ISI Yogyakarta in a series of academic activities that brought together researchers, artists, lecturers, and doctoral students from various countries.
Participation in the international forum provides an opportunity for students to present their ideas, discuss artistic research methodologies, and build cross-cultural collaborations relevant to the development of contemporary art and design education.
One of the agendas to be attended on June 8, 2026 is Critical Mapping Workshop with Malte and Lucas from Studio Mess, which took place at Guterbahnhof, Bremen. This workshop invited participants to explore various approaches to mapping research findings through diverse creative mediums, ranging from sketches, illustrations, poetry, sound recordings (soundscape), text, numerical data, video, photography, as well as memory archives and digital references.
Through this approach, participants are invited to understand how experiences, knowledge, and research findings can be translated into artistic forms capable of opening new intercultural dialogues. This activity is in line with the development artistic research which is increasingly gaining attention in various art education institutions worldwide as a method of producing knowledge based on artistic practice.


The Director of the Postgraduate Program at ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Fortunata Tyasrinestu, S.S., M.Si., emphasized that the involvement of doctoral students in international forums is part of a strategy to strengthen globally oriented academic and research capacity.
“Student participation in international conferences and colloquiums is an important space for broadening perspectives, building collaborative networks, and introducing Indonesian art practices and ideas to the international academic community,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn., stated that strengthening international networks is one of the institution's commitments to improving the quality of arts higher education while expanding ISI Yogyakarta's contribution globally.
“The active participation of students and lecturers in international forums shows that ISI Yogyakarta is not only a national art education center but also a part of the global academic and art research ecosystem. Through cross-cultural dialogue and international collaboration, we continue to foster innovation, knowledge, and art practices that are relevant to global challenges,” he said.
The participation of doctoral students in the Arts program in activities at HfK Bremen also strengthens the academic relationship that has been established between ISI Yogyakarta and Hochschule für Künste Bremen through various international collaboration programs. This relationship forms an important foundation for research development, academic mobility, knowledge exchange, and sustainable art education cooperation.
