Innovative Collaboration: Monica Lim Reinterprets "On Praon" with ISI Yogyakarta Students

Melbourne-based composer and sound artist Monica Lim presents an experimental work entitled "On Praon" in a collaborative project involving students of Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. This collaborative project will be performed on June 21, 2025 at the Plaza of the Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta, at 19.00 WIB until completion. The collaboration between Monica Lim and ISI Yogyakarta students was initiated by ISI Yogyakarta and Project Eleven, Australia.

On Praon is a reinterpretation of the legendary composition "Prau Layar" by karawitan maestro Ki Nartosabdo, which is very popular and loved among Javanese and Indonesian people.

Monica Lim, known for her approach at the intersection of sound and technology, brings a contemporary feel to acoustic classical music. In this project, she combines elements of noise, glitch and indeterminacy to create a new and immersive sound experience.

One of the interesting elements of "On Praon" is the application of machine learning that recognizes the distinctive sounds of traditional instruments such as drums and demungs. The algorithmic response to these sounds automatically triggers electronic processes and activates an interactive lighting installation, creating a synesthesia between sound and visuals.

This project is not only a form of artistic experimentation, but also shows the potential for collaboration across disciplines and cultures, while opening up a space for dialogue between tradition and technology. "On Praon" is proof that cultural heritage never loses its relevance, as long as there is the courage to reinterpret it in the spirit of the times.
