Teaching Practitioner Program: ISI Yogyakarta's Visual Communication Design Program Shaping Future Animators Through Understanding Animation Principles and Processes

To prove its commitment to practice-based learning, the Visual Communication Design Study Program of FSRD ISI Yogyakarta implements a Teaching Practitioner program. One of the latest activities takes place in the Animation course, which aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of the basic principles of animation and its creation process, from pre-production to post-production.

The program, which was held on 10, 11, 17 and 18 October 2024, presented Hizkia Subiyantoro, an animation professional with years of experience as an Animation Director and Visual Storyteller. This practitioner guides students in understanding and applying the basic principles of the limitations of the human eye in capturing motion, the illusion of time, and the art of animating images so that they seem to have a soul (anima). Through this basic logic, students then understand that animation techniques are only limited to the imagination of the creator. A very powerful technique to create the illusion of imagination (cinema). Students are introduced to the material they will get during the class from the beginning to the end in the form of the process of making animatic storyboard material. students understand that animation production, in addition to creativity and artistic innovation, also requires detailed calculations before working on it. The learning process continues with an exploration of the stages of animation production, namely pre-production, production and post-production.

As part of the program, students are divided into groups and asked to create a short animation project by applying all the concepts they have learned. The project was both a challenge and an opportunity for students to work collaboratively, hone their creativity, and face real technical challenges. The program concluded with a group presentation session, where each team showcased their work in front of practitioners, lecturers, and fellow students. These presentations are not only an opportunity to showcase technical abilities, but also to train students' communication skills and confidence in explaining their concepts and creative processes. This collaboration program with practitioners is an effort to create learning experiences that are relevant to the world of work and encourage students to become animation creators who are competitive at the national and international levels.
