Entering the new academic year, 2024/2025 Visual Communication Design Study Program, Faculty of Fine Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta is ready to collaborate with 9 partners, one of which is with Paguyuban Ki Remeng Mangunjaya. Paguyuban Ki Remeng Mangunjoyo is an entity of wayang beber association located in Gelaran II Bejiharjo hamlet, Karangmojo, Wonosari Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. Remeng Mangunjoyo itself is one of the classic stories in Wonosari wayang beber.
Thursday, August 1, 2024. The DKV Study Program delegation team visited Paguyuban Ki Remeng Mangunjoyo to discuss collaboration preparations. The delegation from the DKV Study Program consisted of Daru Tunggul Aji, Indiria Maharsi, P. Gogor Bangsa, Arif Agung Suwasono, Kadek Primayudi, and Lily Elserisa. The DKV study program delegation received a warm welcome from the Chairman of the Association, Wisto Utomo, who is the heir of Wayang Beber as well as the fifteenth generation.
Wonosari's Wayang Beber is now almost 400 years old, and is no longer in perfect condition, especially the Remeng Mangunjaya play. Some parts of the scrolls of Wayang Beber are torn, dirty with dust that has accumulated over hundreds of years. There were also folds in certain parts. Unrolling and rewinding the scrolls during performances that have taken place over several centuries has caused damage to the scrolls. The colors of the images in the scroll have also faded, especially at the folds.
DKV Study Program designed collaborative activities with Paguyuban Ki Remeng Mangunjoyo under the umbrella of the Merdeka 2024 Campus Competition Program (PKKM). This collaborative activity is in line with the vision carried by the DKV study program, in this case, the DKV study program pays great attention to cultural conservation. Through the design of visual assets, it is hoped that it can make Wayang Beber Wonosari more sustainable and can attract the interest and attention of a wide audience. Moreover, Wayang Beber Wonosari is currently listed as an intangible world cultural heritage.
Later, 17 students will carry out out-of-class learning accompanied by lecturers and also from the association to conduct research and visual studies at the location to then draft visual assets. The program will run for the next four months, until the end of November 2024.
