Department of Karawitan, Faculty of Performing Arts, Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta will organize "International Jogjakarta Karawitan Festival 2023" on November 30th to December 1st, 2023 with the theme of "Karawitan Equilibrum Between Science and Art." The International Jogjakarta Karawitan Festival 2023 consists of two activities, namely the international karawitan festival which is held in blended (offline and online) and seminars. The karawitan festival will feature local, national and international karawitan groups. The festival is organized as an effort to find an 'ideal' equilibrium point between the paradigms and interests between science - art in karawitan so that formulations, approaches, methods and strategies can be found that are appropriate and effective and relevant for Karawitan Art Education in the present.
The Karawitan Festival will be held for two days on November 30 and December 1, 2023. The International Jogjakarta Karawitan Festival 2023 is broadcast through ISI Yogyakarta's Youtube channel and on the second day the festival is open to the public and can be watched at the Laboratory Building. The seminar will be held in the Seminar Room GKU FSP ISI Yogyakarta 2nd Floor on December 1, 2023.
Until now, art higher education institutions in Indonesia, especially the Karawitan Department as the organizer of Karawitan art education, still experience bias or disorientation between academic or vocational education. If you look at the vision, mission and profile of graduates, it 'seems' to lead to the academic space, but if you look at the teaching practice, it tends to demand vocational competence. This is certainly not surprising if we trace the history of the establishment of the Karawitan Study Program and Department more motivated by the need or purpose of producing reliable Karawitan practitioners or artists. Because it was "trapped" in the space and structure of bureaucracy and education politics, it was forced to move away from art practice into "academic" demands. In its development, there was indeed a development of needs and demands regarding aspects of scientific development, but then there was a gap in orientation which had an impact on the narrowing of the 'curriculum space' and the decline in process standards for achieving competence in Karawitan art practice. Hopefully, the "International Jogjakarta Karawitan Festival 2023" will be able to provide an ideal format for karawitan education in the country.
