The Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Prof. Dr. Drs. Timbul Raharjo, M.Hum. accompanied by the Head of the International Affairs Unit of ISI Yogyakarta, Silvia A. Purba, M.Sn. again received a foreign researcher from the United States named Elizaveta Buzytsky on Monday, August 7, 2023, in the VIP Room of the Rectorate of ISI Yogyakarta. In June, ISI Yogyakarta also received one of the foreign researchers from the United States, Matthew Clay-Robison who partnered with one of the lecturers of the Faculty of Fine Arts (FSR) ISI Yogyakarta, Warsono, S.Sn., M.Sn.. Elizaveta Buzytsky will partner with Prof. Dr. M. Dwi Maryanto, MFA., Ph.D. to conduct research for 6 months in Indonesia.
Elizaveta Buzytsky will conduct research on batik in Indonesia. The purpose of conducting research on Batik is to contribute to resolving contemporary questions regarding cultural appropriation and the potential exploitation of traditional practices by hegemonic fashion companies responsible for the rise of the environmentally destructive fast fashion industry. The main concern of this research is to better understand and contextualize the ancient craft of Batik in contemporary textile production, specifically conceived as a practice of hybridity defined by Indian-British scholar Homi Bhaba as a "third space." My premise is that Batik functions as a cultural appropriation and potential exploitation of traditional practices by hegemonic fashion corporations. My premise is that Batik functions as a "third space" due to the long history of colonization and occupation in Indonesia, from the presence of Islam in the 12th century to the trading circuit of the Dutch East India Company to the Japanese invasion in the 20th century. All these influences make their way into the visual language of Batik.
This research was organized in collaboration between AMINEF and ISI Yogyakarta. In the future, ISI Yogyakarta will continue to increase collaboration with foreign organizations or researchers so as to increase the quantity and quality of research or publications produced by ISI Yogyakarta academics.
