The Art Management Study Program, Faculty of Fine Arts ISI Yogyakarta in collaboration with National Geographic Indonesia organizes "Bincang Redaksi-30" with the title "The Mystery of the Tiger in Raden Saleh's Painting". The Editorial Talk will be held online on Thursday, July 29, 2021, 19.30 - 21.30 WIB. The event is open to the general public and can be registered at bit.ly/bincangredaksi-30. Bincang Redaksi-30 is held in conjunction with Tiger Day, which is celebrated every July 29.
The invitation poster for "Bincang Redaksi-30" World Tiger Day Edition features a lithography by CW. Mieling's reproduction of a painting by Raden Saleh Syarif Bustaman (1811-1880). The oil painting on canvas is titled "Api Padang Rumput" or "Forest Fire" and was created in 1849. The painting shows a scene of animals running for their lives as the forest where they live burns down. There are tigers, bulls, and bulls that are pushed to the edge of the ravine with no way back.
Raden Saleh, who is ordained as a pioneer of modern painting in Indonesia, is also known as the Picture Artist of Sri Paduka Kanjeng Radja Wolanda. The painter who lived in two worlds-East and West-was lonely at the end of his life. "Animals, especially tigers, for the painter Raden Saleh were not just any animals. Have you ever wondered why Raden Saleh painted a tiger?"
What's with the tiger in Raden Saleh's paintings? Does the big cat have a historical, symbolic, or memory aspect for the maestro? To answer these two questions in Bincang Redaksi-30, two speakers will be presented, namely Dr. Mikke Susanto, MA. art curator and Head of the Art Management Study Program FSR ISI Yogyakarta and Mahandis Yoanata Thamrin as Managing Editor of National Geographic Indonesia. Hopefully both speakers will be able to provide answers to these two questions.
