"Pralaya" Dance Theater (2019)
This performance is a collaboration between I Wayan Dibia (GEOKS Singapadu/Gianyar, Bali-Indonesia) and Lata Sampradaya (Sampradaya Dance Creations, Toronto, Canada). Titled "Pralaya", it combines elements of two cultures with similar backgrounds, bharatanatyam (India) with Balinese dance and music. It is a dialog and interaction between two cultures that are physically and geographically far apart but have many affinities. The central theme of the piece is the game of dice in the epic Mahabharata. This work, supported by 10 dancers, was staged in two stages: first, a group piece in Bali (Indonesia); and a detailed piece in Toronto (Canada). Pralaya was staged at Toronto's Fleck Dance Theater and then performed in eight other cities in Canada, including Sudbury, Ottawa, Mntreal, Calgary, and Vancouver.
The inspiration is the life of people in this modern era who are increasingly controlled by loba and greed, so that they become increasingly greedy and legalize all means to achieve worldly satisfaction. For the sake of glory, they are willing to sacrifice their own siblings as happened between the Pendawa and Korawa families. In this regard, Pralaya is presented as a warning that if we do not want to experience pralaya, then we must be able to control our loba and greed, and treat other humans with love and compassion.
In general, the Pralaya dance theater which lasts approximately 75 minutes includes 5 (five) parts. It starts with the worship of Lord Ganesha as the patron God to ask for the safety of the performance, then continues with the depiction of 4 (four) traits that control human life, namely love, loba, respect, and jealousy. The next two parts are the introduction of the characters of the two feuding families, the Koravas and the Pandavas, in the Mahabharata, and the dice game in Hastina which ends with the defeat of the Pandavas. The next is Dewi Drupadi's protest against the treatment of the Pendawa and Koravas who have dishonored her. The last two parts are the Bharatayudha war that ends with the destruction of a hundred Koravas and a number of Pendawa knights, and the awakening of a new spirit in an atmosphere of harmony and a sense of community.
Synopsis
From the time-honored traditions of Bharatanatyam and Balinese dance, PRALAYA was born. Rooted in the same history, in the great literature of the Mahabharata, revered and venerated in India and Indonesia, PRALAYA is a narrative with timeless and universal resonances of today's turbulent world.
