The Department of Ethnomusicology, Faculty of Performing Arts (FSP), ISI Yogyakarta in collaboration with the American Indonesia Exchange Foundation (AMINEF) and Kunst Universitat Graz, Austria organized the Ethnomusicology Series #2 seminar with the theme "Future Ethnomusicology: New Trends in Indonesia". This seminar was held on Friday, August 4, 2023, at 09.00 WIB until completion at Mini Concert, Department of Ethnomusicology, FSP ISI Yogyakarta by presenting speakers Sarah Weiss, Ph.D. from Kunst Universitat Graz, Austria and Dr. Sean Hayward, MFA, BM. From California Institute of the Arts, United States.
The development of the discipline of Ethnomusicology in the world forces the civitas of the Department of Ethnomusicology, Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta to follow these developments as a marker of part of the world discourse. To realize this, the exploration of knowledge for scientific development must always be rolled out both for oneself and the community with several activities including organizing ethnomusicology seminars every year with the title Ethnomusicology Series #2, with the theme "Future Ethnomusicology: New Trends in Indonesia", which discusses the current discourse related to the development of the discipline of Ethnomusicology which has jumped over the boundaries of the old narrative about music science.
In this seminar Prof.Dr.Sarah Weiss Ph.D from Kunst Universitat Graz (KUG) and Dr. Sean Hayward, MFA discussed interestingly the development of the discipline of ethnomusicology critically as well as discussing the possibility of developing a discourse that will become a trend in the future. Both experts agreed that the future of ethnomusicology is interdisciplinary work that requires many scientific perspectives. In addition, it is time for the Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yk to take a position in the development of this discipline, with new offers such as creative music development that allows the creation of new ideas that are always part of the diversity of thinking.
