ISI Yogyakarta Presents Art Workshop “Technology and Posthumanism”, Emphasizes the Role of Artists in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Yogyakarta, June 19, 2026 — The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta continues to strengthen its position as an art higher education institution adaptive to technological developments through the organization of the Art Workshop: Technology and Post-Humanism. This activity is part of the series of the 42nd Dies Natalis of ISI Yogyakarta in 2026, which carries the main theme “Redefining Arts Impact: Art, Humanity, and Creativity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
The workshop will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) in the Computer Lab of the Design Department, 3rd Floor, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSRD) at ISI Yogyakarta. This event features Rangga Purbaya as the resource person, who will guide participants in exploring the relationship between technological advancements, artistic practices, and the changing ways humans understand creativity in the post-digital era.
Through the theme of Technology and Post-Humanism, this workshop opens a space for critical dialogue regarding the human position amidst technological advancements, especially as artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms, and digital systems become increasingly involved in the art creation process. The issue of post-humanism becomes important because technological developments not only change the tools of creation but also influence how artists think, create, collaborate, and make meaning of the relationship between humans, machines, and the environment.
As the largest art higher education institution in Indonesia, ISI Yogyakarta views technological transformation not as a threat to human creativity, but as a new field of exploration. The presence of AI and digital technology presents an opportunity for artists to expand their artistic language without abandoning the core values of art, namely sensitivity of emotion, human experience, imagination, and social reflection.
The Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn., has emphasized on various occasions that technological development must be positioned as a partner in strengthening the art ecosystem. According to him, art education plays a strategic role in ensuring that technological advancement proceeds hand-in-hand with human values.
“ISI Yogyakarta continues to encourage its academic community to be able to read the changes of the times. Technology, including artificial intelligence, needs to be understood as a new space for creative exploration. However, the center of the entire art creation process remains in the ideas, sensitivity, and humanistic values brought by the artist,” said the Rector.
This workshop is also in line with the direction of ISI Yogyakarta's development as a center for education, research, and art creation based on innovation. Through various academic and artistic forums, ISI Yogyakarta continuously brings together art traditions, science, technology, and future perspectives to produce artists and creators capable of contributing to global change.
This activity is not only a space for knowledge transfer, but also an idea laboratory to see how technology can expand possibilities in fine arts, design, new media, and other interdisciplinary practices.
The organization of the workshop during the 42nd Dies Natalis is a representation of ISI Yogyakarta's commitment to building an art ecosystem that is relevant to the times. By raising the issue of post-humanism, ISI Yogyakarta asserts that the future of art is not merely about machines' ability to create works, but rather how humans continue to bring meaning, empathy, and creativity into increasingly complex technological networks.
Through these various academic and artistic agendas, ISI Yogyakarta continues to strengthen its role as a center of excellence in higher arts education that preserves cultural values while leading creative exploration in the era of artificial intelligence.
