Collage as a Medium for Academic Dialogue between DKV ISI Yogyakarta and Trisakti University

Yogyakarta, April 30, 2026 — The Visual Communication Design Study Program of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta, welcomed an academic visit from the Visual Communication Design Study Program of Trisakti University. The visit was part of an Academic Study and Workshop held at the Ajiyasa Building, 2nd Floor. This event served as a space for academic exchange between art and design higher education institutions to strengthen the sharing of knowledge, creative experiences, and student networks in the field of visual communication design.

The academic visit was part of the Trisakti University Field Work Lecture series in Yogyakarta. A total of 106 students and 7 lecturers participated in the activity, which was organized in collaboration with the DKV Student Association of ISI Yogyakarta, or STUDIS. Through this activity, students from both institutions had the opportunity to get to know each other's learning dynamics, creative practices, and the academic atmosphere within the art and design educational environment.

The event began with an overview of FSRD ISI Yogyakarta's profile by the Dean of FSRD, Muhamad Sholahuddin, S.Sn., M.T. On this occasion, the Dean of FSRD introduced the vision, programs, and dynamics of learning development in the faculty. A welcome speech was also delivered by the Head of the DKV Study Program at Trisakti University, Bambang Tri Wardoyo, S.Sn., M.Ds., who emphasized the importance of experience exchange among students as part of the process of strengthening academic and professional insights.

The event's climax was filled with a collage workshop titled “Expressions of Courage.” This workshop invited students to process personal ideas, anxieties, and hidden thoughts through simple media like old newspapers and magazines. Using traditional collage techniques, participants freely arranged text and visuals to create expressive, communicative, and meaningful works.

The participants' works are then applied to a 4.5 cm diameter acrylic insert pin media and cassette covers. These media are processed symbolically or explicitly as personal artifacts that record the creative experiences of the participants. This approach provides students with hands-on experience that the design process is not only about technical skills but also the courage to self-reflect, process ideas, and convey messages through visual language.

As a form of appreciation, STUDIS presents a souvenir titled “Angin Sewon,” packaged in a traditional *kerupuk* (cracker) container and adorned with stenciled images of the mascots of both institutions. The souvenir symbolizes the meeting, exchange of experiences, and creative closeness between students of DKV ISI Yogyakarta and DKV Universitas Trisakti. The souvenir was presented by the Head of STUDIS/HIMA DKV ISI Yogyakarta, Barunata, to the Head of BEM FSRD Trisakti, I Made Deva Widhi Ardhanai.

These academic study activities and workshops affirm ISI Yogyakarta's role as an art higher education institution actively fostering spaces for collaboration, creative dialogue, and inter-campus academic networking. Through such activities, ISI Yogyakarta not only serves as a center for learning art and design but also as a growth space for creative generations capable of developing ideas, visual sensitivity, and expressive power in response to contemporary developments.

The collaboration between Visual Communication Design (DKV) of FSRD ISI Yogyakarta and DKV Universitas Trisakti is expected to be the first step in expanding cooperation opportunities, whether in the form of academic exchange, creative activities, or professional networking development in the field of visual communication design.
