Noor Sudiyati's “Abundance” Affirms the Spiritual Power of Indonesian Ceramics and the Gait of ISI Yogyakarta Academics

Yogyakarta, 11 March 2026 - The practice of ceramic craft again shows its reflective power through the work “Berkelimpahan” created by Dr. Noor Sudiyati, M.Sn., an academic and artist from the Craft Department, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSRD), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. The work emphasizes that clay is not just an artistic material, but a medium that records the deep relationship between humans, nature, and the universe.

The work “Abundance” comes in the form of a biomorphic vessel with dimensions of approximately 43 × 33 × 24 cm that brings out organic elements resembling floral growth. The form becomes a visual metaphor of the womb of life, the fertility of nature, and the abundance of energy that sustains human existence. Through this work, Noor Sudiyati invites the public to re-read the relationship between humans and nature as a source of life that must be cared for and respected.

As an artist and academic, Noor Sudiyati is known for consistently positioning ceramics not only as an aesthetic object, but as a space for philosophical dialogue. Clay is treated as a living entity that responds to the touch of the maker's hand, bringing a spiritual dimension to the creative process. The techniques used - from stamping, twisting, massaging, to pasting - are not merely technical procedures, but part of a contemplative practice that unites artistic practice with the artist's inner journey.

The work “Berkelimpahan” was also presented in the Solo International Visual Art (SIVA) exhibition at ISI Surakarta in November 2025. In the context of the exhibition, curator Prof. M. Dwi Marianto considered Noor Sudiyati's work to have a strong spiritual depth. The long process of processing clay material is understood as a form of patience, perseverance, and artistic awareness that goes beyond the mere production of art objects.

In addition to SIVA, Noor Sudiyati's work has also been recorded in a number of other international art forums, such as the Art Ketam International Art Festival in Selangor, Malaysia, and the Multiframe exhibition #6: Transcending Boundaries at Jogja Gallery. The presence of these works shows how Indonesian craft art is able to be present in the global art conversation by bringing a distinctive cultural perspective.

In her artistic journey, Noor Sudiyati emphasizes that the practice of creating art cannot be separated from her role as an educator. For her, teaching and creating are two complementary processes. Her creative experience in the studio becomes a source of learning for students, while the educational process enriches her artistic exploration. This approach reflects a living model of art education, where artistic practice and academic reflection go hand in hand.

Noor Sudiyati's work also shows the important contribution of ISI Yogyakarta as the largest art university in Indonesia in encouraging the development of contemporary craft art. Through research activities, creation of works, and participation in international exhibitions, the academics and artists of this campus help strengthen Indonesia's position in the global art map.

This success also emphasizes ISI Yogyakarta's strategic role as a space for the birth of artistic ideas that are grounded in cultural values while being open to international conversations. Through works such as “Berkelimpahan”, craft is not only an aesthetic expression, but also a medium for reflection on life, spirituality, and human relationships with the universe.

Thus, Noor Sudiyati's work not only marks the personal journey of an artist, but also represents the vitality of the Indonesian craft tradition that continues to develop through innovation, philosophical reflection, and strong academic contributions from the ISI Yogyakarta campus.
