The 6th APHIC Week Showcases the Quality of Photography Education at ISI Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta, 24 December 2025 - The Photography Study Program, Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta again held the 6th APHIC Week as a space for learning and appreciation of student photography works. This annual event was officially opened and featured as many as 101 photographic works with old print techniques that were exhibited to the public.

APHIC Week is an academic agenda designed to strengthen students' understanding of the history, process, and character of the photographic medium. In this sixth edition, students presented a variety of works explored through classic print techniques, such as cyanotype, salt print, and gum bichromate, as part of the enrichment of artistic and conceptual competencies.

The Head of the FSMR Photography Study Program said that APHIC Week is an important vehicle for students to test their visual sensitivity as well as the depth of research in photography practice. Through the old print approach, students are invited to understand photography not only as a visual result, but also as a material, historical, and reflective process.

The exhibition involved a cross-section of students and was the outcome of a classroom learning process that was developed into a public experience. In addition to the exhibition, the 6th APHIC Week was also coupled with discussions and supporting activities that encouraged dialogue between students, lecturers, and visitors on the development of contemporary photographic practices rooted in classical techniques.

The Dean of the Faculty of Recording Media Arts ISI Yogyakarta (Dr. Edial Rusli, S.E., M.Sn.) emphasized that the organization of APHIC Week is in line with the commitment of FSMR and ISI Yogyakarta in building an impactful art education ecosystem. This activity not only strengthens student learning outcomes, but also opens space for interaction with the wider community through works that have artistic and educational value.

Meanwhile, Head of the Photography Department at Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, Novan Jeremy Andrea, appreciated the students' hard work in organizing the 6th APHIC Week exhibition. He considered that the process of producing works as well as managing exhibitions was a challenging learning experience, considering that students had to divide their time between lectures, the process of creating works, and the dynamics of collective work in a team.

The 6th APHIC Week exhibition also received support from a number of national photography figures, including Prof. Drs. Soeprapto Soedjono, M.F.A., Ph.D., Johnny Hendarta, EFIAP, Hon.E.FPSI, A.FPSI, E.FPSI, QPSA, and Drs. Surisman Marah, M.Sn.. The presence of these figures is a form of appreciation as well as support for efforts to preserve and develop old print photography that continues to be developed in the academic environment of ISI Yogyakarta.

By organizing the 6th APHIC Week, ISI Yogyakarta emphasizes its role as an art education institution that consistently encourages exploration, innovation, and preservation of photographic knowledge, while preparing students to be adaptive and competitive in the ever-evolving visual arts landscape.
