"ANTIGONE DIALOG": MARKING A NEW CHAPTER OF INTERMEDIAL THEATER IN YOGYAKARTA

ISI Yogyakarta - From the stage of WS Rendra Auditorium, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, September 21-22, 2025, came a theatrical event that marked a new chapter in the relationship between performing arts and digital technology. "Antigone's Dialogue" by Prof. Dr. Yudiaryani, M.A., is not just a classical performance, but a manifestation of intermedial theaterIt is a form of performance that brings together the body, technology and digital space in an artistic dialog.

Based on Jean Anouilh's "Antigone" (1944), Yudiaryani reinterprets the legendary text into an intermedial field of experimentation. For the director, theater is no longer just a space for actors to perform and dialogue, but a space for interactions between media from the body, sound, projection, to artificial intelligence.

"This show is the result of a long research about intermedial dramaturgywhere mise en scène is not just an arrangement of stage elements, but becomes the language of the thinking body," said Yudiaryani on the sidelines of the performance.

Silvia Anggreni Purba, a theater lecturer at ISI Yogyakarta, makes a strong appearance as Antigone - a woman who refuses to submit to power. Through movement and sound escorted by digital projection design, Antigone appears as a symbol of female resistance in the midst of a technological landscape.

"For me, this is the most challenging experience. The stage is no longer static, but a living space that continues to respond to the actor's body," says Silvia.

This work also introduces Design Projection Intermedial (DPI)A projection system that allows images, typography and animation to react in real-time to the actors' movements and the storyline. As a result, the stage becomes a living digital canvas - somewhere between theater, film and media installation.

"Dialog Antigone" is a representation of research theater that places Yogyakarta as a barometer of performing arts innovation in Indonesia. This performance received support from Indonesiana Fund of the Ministry of Culture, Diktisaintek Impact, and Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta.

"Through this performance, we want to show that artistic research can produce works that are relevant to the times. Antigone is not only a figure of resistance, but also a symbol of dialogue between art, technology, and humanity," Yudiaryani concluded.
