The Visual Communication Design Study Program of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design ISI Yogyakarta again shows its commitment to improving the quality of practice-based learning through Teaching Practitioner activities. In the Animation Film course, students have the opportunity to get insights directly from industry practitioners, as well as create real work in the form of a three-minute short animation video. This Teaching Practitioner program presents Ermambang Bendung, a professional who has more than 10 years of experience in the animation industry as a director, art director, concept artist and illustrator. For one semester, he worked closely with the lecturers of the course, M. Faizal Rochman, S.Sn., M.T. and Debby Dwi Elsha, S.I.Kom., M.A., to provide students with the concepts, techniques, and processes of making animated films that are relevant to the needs of the industry today.
The activity, which is part of the Independent Campus Competition Program (PKKM), Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia 2024, is carried out for 7th semester students. The main objective of the program, which was held on 17, 18, 23 and 25 September 2024, is to bridge the academic and industrial worlds, so that students not only understand theory, but are also able to produce competitive work. In the learning process, students are divided into several groups. Each group is responsible for producing a short animated video with a duration of three minutes. The project includes all stages of production, from script creation, storyboard, character design, animation, to final editing.
Students were very enthusiastic in exploring creative ideas and applying modern animation techniques. They not only learned about techniques, but also the importance of storytelling in an animated film. Students presented the ideas and concepts of short animated films that they worked on in groups in front of practitioners and lecturers to then get feedback and direction for the next stages. This program is expected to be a sustainable learning model to improve students' competencies and prepare them to face challenges in the animation industry. In addition, collaboration with practitioners also opens up wider professional networking opportunities for students. With the success of this Teaching Practitioner program, Communication Design Study Program continues to provide the best learning experience for its students, while supporting the development of the creative industry in Indonesia.
