ISI Yogyakarta held a national seminar with the theme "Art, Religion, Civilization" on June 6, 2024, at the Concert Hall ISI Yogyakarta, at 08.00 - 12.30 WIB. This national seminar presented three speakers, namely Dr. Haryatmoko from Sanata Dharma University Yogyakarta, Dr. Saras Dewi from the University of Indonesia, A. Sujud Dartanto, S.Sn., M.A. from the National Gallery of Indonesia and one key speaker, Prof. Dr. Fransisco Budi Hardiman, S.S., M.A. from Pelita Harapan University. Dr. Koes Yuliadi as moderator and Trisna Pradita Putra, S.Sos., M.M., as host will ensure that the seminar runs smoothly and interestingly. The seminar is held as one of the significant steps in enriching the understanding of the relationship between art, religion, civilization.
The national seminar was opened by the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi. M.Hum. In his remarks, Dr. Irwandi, M.Hum. said that this seminar was a means of critical reflection. The speakers presented were "Teachers of the Nation", Thinkers of Nationality and State Ethics, Cultural Thinkers, and Art Reviewers. Let us use this momentum to discuss, share views, and rediscover the role of art in our evolving society.
The journey of the citizens of this nation has not been easy. It has taken us through steep paths, curves, passages, often accompanied by worrying turbulence. Nevertheless, the citizens of Indonesia have been tested enough to face and solve complex problems - including social, economic, political, cultural situations, intolerance, environmental crises, ethical crises, legal manipulation, and so on - even though they are never actually resolved to the root of the problem.
In the midst of such a situation, a specific question arises, "what is the role of art in national issues?"; or "where does art play a role". This question is relevant considering that the genetics of the Indonesian nation is basically art. Some citizens are accustomed to expressing many interests through the medium of art. While some of us believe that art is closely related to the issue of training the fineness of the mind, sharpening sensitivity to humanity and various social, political and environmental issues. Are artists starting to lose their critical power? Are artists becoming dull and moving away from taking sides in various crises? Is art beginning to lose its function as an arouser of national, civic and humanitarian awareness?
At the age of 40 or entering the 8th Lustrum celebration, ISI Yogyakarta deserves these questions, given its position as an art higher education institution that teaches the practice of art creation and the production of art knowledge, which is expected that its academicians and alumni can play a role in society actively, productively, and enlightening. The speakers have tried to answer these questions through their presentations.
According to Dr. Suwarno Wisetrotomo as the Coordinator of the 8th Lustrum National Seminar ISI Yogyakarta, the seminar participants registered offline and online amounted to 330 people and those present in this room amounted to 212 people. The interesting presentation of each speaker made the participants listen carefully to the delivery of the presentation so that it changed the length of time for organizing the seminar which was originally going to end at 12.00 WIB turned into 12.30 WIB.
