Awarding Honorary Doctorate Degrees to Karl-Edmund Prier, SJ and Professor Gunnar Spellmeyer

ISI Yogyakarta will confer the title of Honorary Doctor (Doktor Honoris Causa) to Karl-Edmund Prier, SJ or more popularly known as Romo Prier and Professor Gunnar Spellmeyer on Thursday, May 11, 2023. The honorary degree was given at the Open Senate Session of the Indonesian Institute of Arts Yogyakarta which was held at the Concert Hall ISI Yogyakarta. The honorary degree of Doktor Honoris Causa given to the two figures is based on their level of expertise and dedication in the fields of music and design.

Father Karl-Edmund Prier SJ, is a very meritorious figure in the field of music science, especially liturgical music. For ISI Yogyakarta, Romo Prier also contributed to the establishment and development of the Music Department. He has taught in the Music Department since the department was established at the Indonesian Music Academy (AMI) until it became the Indonesian Institute of Arts Yogyakarta (ISI). He taught for 33 years (1971-2024) in the subjects of Music History, Music Repertoire Review, Music Form Science, and Contrapuntal at ISI Yogyakarta.

Pomovendus, Professor Gunnar Spellmeyer is a Professor in the field of Industrial Design Process and Presentation at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover, Germany since 2000. He also received the title Professor Honoris Causa from the United University of Hefei China. He became a meritorious figure in initiating cooperation with ISI Yogyakarta and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannove by organizing an annual workshop that has been going on for 9 years and is still going on today. In addition, he also initiated the staff and student mobility program funded by Erasmus Plus so as to provide opportunities for some of his students to do research in Indonesia and also internships in several companies in Yogyakarta.

To Romo Prier and Professor Gunnar Spellmeyer, thank you for all the dedication given so far, especially for ISI Yogyakarta. This dedication also demands the consequences of ISI Yogyakarta to be more professional as a provider of higher education in the arts. Hopefully this Honoris Causa Doctorate degree will bring blessings, become a person who continues to serve, contribute, and benefit himself, family, and society.
