Pictures of the Year (POY) Asia is an international photography competition held annually. The competition is organized as a commitment to promote Asian-based photographers and stories. POY Asia is committed to seeing the world from an Asian perspective based on images produced by Asian photographers. The first competition in 2021 started with nine categories. In 2022, a new category of recreational & traditional sports was added. As the world increasingly returned to pre-pandemic 'normalcy', in 2023 the COVID-19 category was dropped in favor of action sports, general news, life and Portrait Series.
In this international competition, Doni Wilson Apriel submitted a photo that highlights the tradition of Si Semba, Toraja. Si Semba is a foot-fighting tradition performed after the rice harvest as a form of gratitude to the creator for the harvest. This foot fight is performed en masse by children to adult men. In the implementation of this foot fight, participants are not allowed to attack with their hands, do not attack fallen opponents, and should not hold grudges. Si semba teaches us to stay strong and patient in life. Apart from being a form of gratitude, this tradition is also held as a hope that the next harvest will be more abundant, avoid crop failure, and strengthen brotherhood.
