Art Governance Study Program and National Geographic Indonesia Collaborate to Hold Editorial Talk-47

The S-1 Art Management Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta and National Geographic Indonesia collaborate to organize Editorial Talk-47 with the theme "Natural History of Mount Merapi in Paintings". Editorial Talk-47 will be held online on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at 19.30 - 21.00 WIB. In this webinar, the speakers will be Ghamal Satya Mohammad, M.A. (Doctoral Researcher at Asia Research Centre, Murdoch University Australia), Dr. Mikke Susanto, M.A. (Head of S-1 Art Management Study Program FSR Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta) and Mahandis Yoanata Thamrin (Managing Editor of National Geographic Indonesia).

Merapi has become a landmark. Its majesty is both a monument and a spiritual symbol of the people of Yogyakarta. Every second, scientists monitor its volcanic activity, which is enough to keep residents on guard. However, studies of Merapi related to art in the context of natural history are still relatively rare.

A series of artists have recorded its face throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Their works appear in a variety of themes-cultural traces, science, views of nature, to the severity of the disaster caused by its wrath. These paintings are part of the dynamics of Merapi's history that can tell stories across generations.

(1878-1942) is one of the painters who recorded the face of Merapi. His painting titled "Scenery Around Mount Merapi" became Bung Karno's collection. He was known as a Mooi Indie style painter in the early 20th century. However, today, his figure is almost forgotten in our history. What does Merapi look like in the recordings of 19th-century painters? Why are these paintings important to us? What is the figure of Abdullah Suriosubroto, one of the artists who perpetuated the mountain in his canvas? These questions will be answered by the three speakers.
This editorial talk with the theme of Mount Merapi is open to the general public. Those interested in joining the discussion can register at bit.ly/bincangredaksi-47. Drink cups are available for lucky questioners.
