Press Release - (Bantul, November 30, 2020) To conclude the series of activities for the 70th HARLAH exhibition of the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI), which became the forerunner of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, a National Art Forum was held in the form of an online discussion through the zoom meeting platform. The discussion took the theme: Understanding Indonesia Through Art Education "The Role, Contribution of Artists, Art, and Art Education in Building a Dignified Indonesia".
The idea of this discussion forum is to bring together various perspectives in looking at art education through the views of policy makers, education implementers, and artists. The discussion forum presented speakers from the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Nadiem Makarim, MBA, Prof. Dr. M. Agus Burhan, Rector of ISI Yogyakarta as keynote speaker and resource person, Dr. Suwarno, a lecturer in fine arts and art curator. Representing artists and alumni were Butet Kartaredjasa and Entang Wiharso. The discussion was guided by Dr. Suastiwi Triatmodjo, a lecturer in fine arts at ISI Yogyakarta, as moderator.
The Minister of Education and Culture opened the discussion by expressing his view that artists must have the courage to present their work to the public. The courage in question is social courage (as an artist in the profession), so considering income is also an important point in the development of creativity. Technological disruption must become an artist's awareness and must know how to find their position in the rapid and massive developments in technology. Art can also be seen in its psychosocial dimension, so that its potential to create art as a social bridge.
Prof. Dr. M. Agus Burhan, Rector of ISI Yogyakarta on the occasion said that it is necessary to transform ASRI values (nationality, populism, arts human resources) in today's paradigm and needs. Strengthening art human resources through higher education must now produce superior works, mastery of science, information technology, and digitalization. In addition to superior artist competence, it must also be accompanied by social skills, soft skills, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Various community service activities and off-campus internships strengthen awareness of creative and innovative populist values, as well as tolerance and national values.
Entang Wiharso and Butet Kertaradjasa, as artists and alumni of ISI Yogyakarta, expect the government to pay attention to museums, because art (fine art) needs a common home, so that the output can display paintings and other works of art. Museums/galleries are a representation of the value of a nation's identity, and can also be a place for public art meetings and entertaining cultural guests. Art can also be empowered to deal with intolerance and counteract radicalism that is already visible. On this occasion, they expressed that there is still a view among artists that it is easier to get knowledge of art through accessing information from/through the outside world than through art colleges.

Dr. Suwarno, ISI Yogyakarta lecturer and art curator in his presentation emphasized that art must be able to cross values. Understanding national values through diversity, through art, should be the vision of universities. Another problem is how to encourage art as a science.
The discussion forum ran smoothly, was interesting, and the participants responded enthusiastically until the activity ended.
