In his speech, the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta said that this event was very important and historic for ISI Yogayakarta and for the world of Indonesian journalistic photography, because the awarding of Empu Ageng is the title of maestro achievement in the highest and prestigious art competence in the tradition of higher education at ISI Yogyakarta. "ISI Yogyakarta is a pioneer in awarding Empu Ageng to the highest artistic achievement, as has been awarded to Empu Ageng Cokrowasito in 2004, Empu Ageng Edhi Sunarso in 2010, Empu Ageng Ki Timbul Hadi Prayitno in 2011, and also Empu Ageng Abbas Alibasyah in 2012," he explained.
The Empu Ageng Award to Oscar Motuloh has been through consideration of the achievement of his extraordinary works, as well as his services in the development of science and the world of Indonesian journalistic photography, as well as various discoveries and innovations in his creativity that have a broad influence on social and cultural life. All of this has received strict consideration and in a long process, from the academic community and the Photography Study Program of the Faculty of Recording Media Arts, various stakeholders in the world of Indonesian journalistic photography, the Senate of the Faculty of Recording Media Arts, and the Senate of the Indonesian Institute of Arts Yogyakarta, as well as notification and reports to the Minister of the Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia.
Based on the Statute of ISI Yogyakarta Article 24 paragraph (1), it is stated that Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta can give an honorary doctoral degree (Doctor Honoris Causa) and the title Empu Ageng for someone who has and has made extraordinary contributions in the field of arts and culture. Empu Ageng is an honorary degree equivalent to the honorary degree of Doktor Honoris Causa (HC). The difference is that the Doktor Honoris Causa degree is given by ISI Yogyakarta to someone who meets scientific considerations, his contribution to the world of education, humanity, arts and culture. While Empu Ageng is a title given to someone for consideration of the process and traces of work and its contribution to education, humanity, art and culture that is extraordinary.
Copromoter Edial Rusli said the awarding of an honorary degree to the Surabaya-born photographer, 17 August 1956, was the first of its kind in the field of photography. Oscar Motuloh initiated the Antara Photo Bureau to become an independent division.
