Novosibirsk, Russia, May 31, 2026 \u2014 The delegation from the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta is participating in the IV \u201cCrossroads\u201d International Puppet Theater Festival, organized by the Novosibirsk Regional Puppet Theater in Novosibirsk, Russian Federation, from May 31 to June 4, 2026. This participation is a strategic step for ISI Yogyakarta in expanding its international performing arts network while introducing the richness of Indonesian traditional arts to the global public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the festival, ISI Yogyakarta presented a Wayang Golek Menak performance titled \u201cThe Knight Searching for His Father\u201d or \u201cIman Suwongso Takon Bapa.\u201d The performance is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 5:00 PM local time, at the Puppet Theatre Main Hall, 22 Lenin Street, Novosibirsk. ISI Yogyakarta's presence in this program places Indonesian performing arts alongside puppet theater groups from various countries, including Tajikistan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, Uzbekistan, as well as several theaters from Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This participation is significant for ISI Yogyakarta as it demonstrates the capability of Indonesian art higher education institutions in bringing local traditions to the global art stage. Through Wayang Golek Menak, the ISI Yogyakarta delegation not only introduced a traditional performing art form but also showed how tradition can be creatively adapted through artistic approaches relevant to international platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wayang Golek Menak is a wooden puppet performing art that developed in Java, including Yogyakarta. This tradition originates from the Menak story, which features the character Amir Hamzah, and has developed within Javanese cultural heritage. In the performance in Novosibirsk, the work brought by ISI Yogyakarta was presented with a cinematic accompaniment approach, blending gamelan and pre-recorded modern music. This format provides space for the tradition to be presented with a communicative, concise, and adaptive stage language for a cross-cultural audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The performance \u201cIman Suwongso Takon Bapa\u201d (Iman Suwongso Asks His Father) tells a story of search, deception, realization, and the restoration of family relationships. The story features the character Iman Suwongso, who is almost tricked by Prabu Kisthapangidrus and Patih Bestak, nearly harming Jayusman and Jayengrono, the father he has been searching for. Upon learning the truth, Iman Suwongso realizes the deception and demands justice. This narrative presents a message about wisdom, self-awareness, and the triumph of truth over cunning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artistically, the performance lasts approximately 32 minutes and is performed by three puppeteers. With stage requirements of about five meters by three meters, a black backdrop, and maximum lighting, this performance is designed to showcase the visual power of the wooden puppets, the puppeteers' gestures, and a dramatic atmosphere that can be appreciated by an international audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participation of the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Yogyakarta, in this festival also serves as part of Indonesia's cultural diplomacy. Performing arts, especially wayang, have the power to unite people across nations through aesthetic experiences. In the context of Indonesia-Russia relations, the presence of the ISI Yogyakarta delegation strengthens people-to-people connections through art, culture, and knowledge exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cCrossroads\u201d festival in Novosibirsk brings together various puppet theater systems, artistic traditions, and creative approaches from many countries. The festival program includes an open parade, the festival opening, main performances, showcases, master classes, and jury sessions. Thus, ISI Yogyakarta's involvement is not only in the form of performances but also serves as a space for building professional networks, understanding the development of international puppet art, and opening up opportunities for future academic and artistic collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For ISI Yogyakarta, this participation reinforces the institution's position as an art higher education institution with strong roots in tradition and actively engaged in global art discourse. The Wayang Golek Menak tradition, which grew in Yogyakarta, is brought to the international stage not as a relic of the past, but as a living, developing art practice capable of dialoguing with the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participation of the delegation from the Faculty of Performing Arts at ISI Yogyakarta in Novosibirsk is expected to further strengthen ISI Yogyakarta's reputation as a center for education, creation, research, and development of performing arts in Indonesia. Through this international stage, ISI Yogyakarta once again demonstrates that Indonesian traditional art possesses bargaining power, vitality, and reach that are important in building intercultural relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
