Yogyakarta, May 7, 2026 \u2014 The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, through its craft art ecosystem, once again demonstrates its role as an art higher education institution actively promoting the development of tradition, innovation, and contemporary art discourse. This is evident in the contemporary craft exhibition titled \u201cMetal in Flux: Crafting Tradition and Innovation,\u201d which will be held from May 9 to June 9, 2026, at Omah Budoyo, Jl. Karangkajen No. 793, Brontokusuman, Mergangsan, Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exhibition features five metal artists: Alvi Lufiani, Budi Hartono, Dhyani W. Hendranto, Timbul Raharjo, and Titiana Irawani. Through the artworks displayed, metal is no longer positioned solely as a hard, rigid, and decorative material, but as a flexible, living medium of expression capable of responding to various cultural and ecological issues, memory, and the psychological experiences of modern humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the theme of Crafting Tradition and Innovation<\/em>, This exhibition showcases how metal crafts can move beyond ornamental boundaries. Artists transform metal into an artistic language to reinterpret tradition, develop material approaches, and offer new perspectives on the relationships between humans, objects, and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presence of this exhibition is an important part of ISI Yogyakarta's contribution in strengthening the position of craft as an academic discipline that is relevant with the times. As an art higher education institution, ISI Yogyakarta continues to encourage the meeting of artistic practice, material research, tradition inheritance, and innovation of form. This exhibition also serves as proof that craft not only functions as a product of skill, but also as a field for the creation of ideas, critique, and cultural reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition \u201cMetal in Flux,\u201d curated by Sudjud Dartanto, was opened by Garin Nugroho. The opening ceremony took place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 3:30 PM Western Indonesia Time, with Suwarno Wisetrotomo as the host. The opening event was also enlivened by a special performance by Paranoise Activity: Nanang Garuda and Friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, this exhibition is also held to coincide with the retirement of Dra. Titiana Irawani, M.Sn., a lecturer in the Craft Department\/Program, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, ISI Yogyakarta. The presence of this moment provides its own meaning, as this exhibition is not only a space for appreciating works but also a tribute to academic and artistic dedication in the development of crafts at ISI Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition runs until June 9, 2026, and is open to the public every Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Western Indonesian Time. Through this exhibition, the public is invited to see how metal transforms into a medium capable of voicing cultural resilience, creativity, and the power of Indonesian craft innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
