Educational Programmes

ISI Yogyakarta has three faculties, which offers eight-semester study programmes leading to Undergraduate Sarjana Degree in Arts. Additionally, the Postgraduate programmes of Master Degrees in Research and Artworks Creativity have been established since year 2000, while Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Creative Arts programmes have been established since year 2006. The faculties are as follow:

A. Faculty of Visual Art

  1. Department of Fine Arts, which offers courses in painting and drawing, sculpture, and printmaking.
  2. Department of Crafts, which offers courses in wooden, metal, batik and tenun textile, ceramic, and leather crafts.
  3. Department of Design, which offers courses in interior design and visual communication design.

B. Faculty of Performing Arts

  1. Department of Dance, which offers courses in dance performance and choreography, both modern and traditional.
  2. Department of Karawitan Music, which offers courses in Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese music performance and composition.
  3. Department of Ethnomusicology, which offers courses in Nusantara archipelago folk music, Asian tribal, and classical music traditions.
  4. Department of Puppetry, which offers courses in the artistry of Javanese shadow-puppet play.
  5. Department of Music, which offers courses in Western music performance, Western-based school music, musicology and composition.
  6. Department of Theatre, which offers courses in acting, directing, visual stage-setting, modern and traditional.

C. Faculty of Recorded Media Arts

  1. Department of Photography, which offers courses in photographic art.
  2. Department of Television, which offers courses in television programming.

D. Graduate Programme

The City Campus of ISI Yogyakarta at Suryodiningratan is the home for the S2 (Master Programme) and S3 (Doctor of Philosophy Programme). The Graduate Programme, both S2 and S3 consist of two concentrations:

  1. Penciptaan Seni (Creative Arts Programme).
  2. Pengkajian Seni (Research Arts Programme).

Research and Community Service

The ISI Yogyakarta academic staffs are encouraged to engage in research and community service activities, within the framework of the Government Master plan. Research topics include the various aspects of the Indonesian arts, or inventory process of the artworks. Faculty and students are also involved in counselling the community to meet the need of skill improvements of some particular art-groups. These activities, worth millions of Rupiah yearly, are coordinated through the research and community service institutions. Meanwhile, collaborative programmes have been successfully developed in organising exhibitions, concerts, performances, workshops, and master classes conducted by visiting artists, or co-sponsoring lectures and research projects by visiting scholars under sponsorship of foreign cultural agencies, such as, Dutch Cultural Centre ‘Erasmus Huis’, The Japan Foundation, Australian Cultural Counsellor, The British Council, Goethe Institute, American Indonesian Exchange Foundation, Australian Embassy, and French Cultural Centre. The collaborating institutions overseas are as follows:

  2. Rotterdam Conservatoriums, The Netherlands.
  3. University of California, Los Angeles, USA
  4. Shimane University, Matsue, Japan.
  5. Wien Hochschule fur Musik und darstellende Kunst.

Campus

The main campus is located at Sewon, about six kilometres to the south of the city on the highway to Parangtritis beach resort that is easily reached by public transports. Sewon is a lively suburbia within the Bantul region, where access, amenities and accommodation are plentiful. For students, there are many accommodation and transport options to suit every budget. The Sewon campus is the Institute's newest campus occupied since 1986, on a 2550 square metres land, with facilities including administrative buildings and academic buildings, as well as modern study facilities of studios, auditoriums, pendapa, library, art-gallery, mosque, student's centre, language centre, multimedia production house, cafeteria, and sport centres of tennis court and soccer field. The main pendapa and auditorium is nearing finish with facilities that include shopping arcades of the arts for touristy purpose.

Students

ISI Yogyakarta attracts many of young, bright, and talented students from all over the country mainly from Java, Bali and Sumatera where secondary schools of art have been flowering in those big cities. The number of applicants each year grows immensely. During the 1990s over 2000 applications were received every year. Presently, there are over 3000 students registered. ISI Yogyakarta also welcomes the application from overseas students who are interested in learning the Indonesian traditional art, mostly as non-degree programme student. Courses on traditional dance, karawitan music, and batik craft are the most popular study programmes for overseas students that amount to 25-40 international students each year.

Application Procedures (for International Student) Requirements for applying:

  1. Meet the academic requirement for enrolment in higher education.
  2. Accepted by the host institution.
  3. Financial support by the sponsor.
  4. Good command of health.
  5. Observance to local regulations.

Procedures to apply:

  1. Write an application letter to the rector with the essential evidence of applicant's status.
  2. After obtaining the approval letter from the rector, then apply for a visa Kunjungan Sosial Budaya from the Indonesian Embassy in the Indonesian Embassy in the applicant's home country, where the visa will be granted directly by the Embassy.
  3. With the above documents, applicant is allowed to start his/her study ISI Yogyakarta, as a non-degree student.
  4. While studying, the student submits all the essential recommendation Directorate General of Higher Education office in Jakarta, with consent to Planning and International Cooperation Bureau of The Ministry of National Education.
  5. After staying in Indonesia up to four months, the student can apply for visa conversion into Kartu ljin Tinggal Sementara (KITAS)/Temporary Stay Permit Card.
  6. Procedure to apply for KITAS or any extension can be submitted to the local Immigration Office in Yogyakarta, without necessary approval from Provincial Office of The Ministry of Justice in Yogyakarta, or Directors General Immigration office in Jakarta.

Visa extension will be endorsed according to the length of study at ISI Yogyakarta, which is recommended by the rector. The exact cost of attending courses at ISI Yogyakarta will vary according to personal needs, but at the time of registration, overseas student must pay the tuition fee up to Rp. 5.000.000,- for one semester. Applicants may take another procedure by applying for Dharmasiswa Scholarship, offered by the Indonesian Government for those who are interested in studying the Indonesian culture. Application form can be obtained from the Indonesian Embassy in the applicant's home country. Recipient of the Dharmasiswa Scholarship will be facilitated to study in Indonesia for a year however applicants are advised to have additional financial sources prior to the admission.

For Sarjana Degree courses, applicants must have studied at ISI Yogyakarta for at least a year as non-degree student, and have a high level of achievement in specified subjects. Applicants must complete an application form in full, and sit for the entrance examination. It is only natural the applicants must have satisfactory Bahasa Indonesia proficiency level.
The academic year is based on two-semester system of Fall Semester from September to January (the following year) and Spring Semester from February to July. Commencement of studies normally takes place in Fall Semester, however, a mid-year intake is possible for non-degree students.
